1988's POWER METAL sounds alot like a mix between early Metallica and Judas Priest(Not that thats a bad thing). Alot of people forget that Pantera were a run of the mill hair metal band in the early 80's with albums like I AM THE NIGHT and METAL MAGIC. POWER METAL is different though, it is the first to feature Phil Anselmo on vocals and the whole band go for a more heavier approach. Dimebag Darrell plays phenomenal guitar work here(As usual) and even sings on the last song P.S.T 88 and sounds alot like early James Hettfield singing. Songs like OVER AND OUT, WE'LL MEET AGAIN, DOWN BELOW, DEATH TRAP, HARD RIDE, and BURNN show that with Phil Anselmo on board there was alot of gelling going on.

Slash Puppet were one of the biggest names of the burgeoning Toronto rock scene of the early 1990′s. Unfortunately, unlike their competition Sven Gali and I Mother Earth, they never got signed to a major label. They did, however, manage to sell out 2500 copies of their first recording, The Demo, an independent cassette, via mail order. They were the darlings of M.E.A.T Magazine and appeared on MuchMusic’s Power Hour. Slash Puppet signed a management deal with Ray Danniels and SRO (Rush) who later also handled Van Halen, King’s X, and Extreme.

Hailing from the province of Antwerp, in the North of Belgium, THORAX was a heavy metal outfit that was around from September of 1985 up until early 1991. And although they never managed to release any vinyl in those days of yore, they definitely made their mark on the local metal scene. Besides plenty of headlining gigs, THORAX also played support slots to the likes of BAD LIZARD, Holland's HELLOISE & VENGEANCE and even the mighty SOUNDGARDEN. Furthermore the band also released three quality demo tapes. However, despite the obvious potential, no record company was prepared to take the gamble of releasing any of THORAX's material properly. And as such it was no surprise that the band slowly but surely fell apart in the early 1990's. Earlier on in 2008 High Roller Records expressed the desire to release all three of THORAX's demos (15 songs in total) as a gatefold double vinyl LP, including plenty of previously unreleased pictures, info and biography. Entitled Test Of Time, THORAX's musical legacy will be unleashed to the general public at long last on November 12th 2008. All I can say is that all those into quality traditional heavy metal from the 1980's should at least check Test Of Time out!

Days Of Rising Doom is a power metal opera that has collaborations from many power metal bands and musicians. The main core of the sound is an amazing orchestral arrangement by Miro Rodenburg, and a guitar-drum-bass core by Robert Hunecke-Rizzo. The orchestral score adds power and grace to the album and story, sweeping through the power metal base of the other instruments. The vocals are done by 15 different vocalists playing each part, with a chorus that performs in many of the songs. The songs range from very slow, graceful songs such as Silver Maiden, to full out Power Metal songs like Flight Of Torek. The sound stays very diverse and interesting throughout the album, and never gets boring. The solos are also very diverse, and are played by a multitude of guest musicians from bands such as Nightwish and Rhapsody of Fire.

GIRLSCHOOL were a sadly overlooked heavy metal band made up of (guess what!) girls! But despite what you might think of a band with girls playing their instruments, GIRLSCHOOL played with such an intensity and a knack for hooky, catchy songs that some of their male counterparts twisted in shame. Despite being spawned during the NEW WAVE OF BRITISH HEAVY METAL's peak, GIRLSCHOOL's sound owed much to fellow punks like DISCHARGE and GBH and of course, MOTORHEAD, with whom they made a friendship that lasts even to this date. The guitar sounds are decidedly brutal, making any of DEF LEPPARD's records of the time (1980-1983) sound positively tame in comparison. HIT AND RUN is GIRLSCHOOL at its most intense, heaviest and fastest, yet the songs were really memorable and had this had a more "subtle" production it would have been an international hit.

Code Red was an attempt to reinvent their old material with some of their newer music, and it was also with a different line-up the band. Code Red perhaps sounds a bit rehashed but the variety among the songs is more than great. The album starts hard with berserker thrash tracks like Code Red and What Hell Can Create, and after that we have slower but heavier track called Tombstone. Sodom also succeeds to mould some small Slayer influences in the three upcoming tracks, and by that I mean both in song appearance and vocal work. Liquidation sounds like a death-forged song with a sinister yet groovy and catchy riff.

Masquerade In Blood might be one of their more overlooked albums, but it is not as bad as you thought it would be, because I think that this album is perhaps one of their heaviest albums but there are of course a few flaws in this album though. In 1995 Sodom released Masquerade In Blood, an album which could be a bit comparable with Slayer's God Hates Us All. This album delivers some of the bands most heaviest material yet in my opinion, with Tom Angelripper's throaty and harsh raspy vocals, his mechanical and powerful bass and the songs have rushed and fast tempos, which makes this album to be quite repetitive but yet forceful thrash attack.
